What is SEL?

According to the leading organization in social emotional learning, the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), "Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions".

Below are some tips to help your student learn through the five SEL catagories:

Self-awareness: talking about your own feelings and teaching them to identify and communicate their feelings

Self-management: teaching and modeling ways to appropriately handle stress, disappointment, and anger

Social awareness: use story time or situations to ask how they would feel if they were in a similar situation

Relationship skills: ask questions about situation instead of just giving advice. Examples: "What do you think your friend was feeling when that happened?" or "How can you work to make things right?"

Responsible decision making: talk about different consequences of an action. Examples "What might happen if you choose not to wear your coat when it's cold outside?" or "How might your friend feel if you cancelled your plan to get together?"
